Blood flow and Oxygenation: Coherence of Low Frequency Oscillations

Professor Geraldine Clough, Southampton, UK, and co-workers have assessed blood flow and oxygenation in skin, simultaneously, finding periodic, low frequency oscillations for both, using FFT analysis. Further analysis revealed frequency coherence between blood flow and oxygenation signals that was greatest in the endothelial and neurogenic frequency bands (around 0.01Hz and 0.04Hz, respectively). These findings support and extend those of Bernjak et al (2012; using wavelet transform for their analysis) and provide a platform from which to investigate pathogenesis of microvascular disease.

The findings will be presented at the upcoming WCM in Kyoto.
